The flavour of elaichi
Green cardamom moves between citrus, eucalyptus, warm resin and sweetness. Its aroma is powerful, so mukhwas makers use it with restraint. Too little disappears behind coated fennel; too much can flatten rose, coconut and delicate seeds.
Whole pod or seed?
The pod protects the small dark seeds inside. Whole pods are often served on their own after a meal, while mukhwas usually uses seed or a measured cardamom note so every pinch remains balanced. Ground cardamom loses aroma faster because more surface is exposed to air.
Pairing cardamom
Cardamom works naturally with fennel, rose, mishri, coconut, dates and paan. In savoury blends it can bridge cumin or coriander to a sweeter finish. In seed mixes, a restrained amount prevents the profile from feeling confectionery.
Storage
Keep pods and seed in a tightly closed pack away from heat and sunlight. Buy quantities you can use while the aroma is still vivid. A premium label cannot recover spice that has already gone flat.
Frequently asked questions
Is elaichi a mouth freshener?
Cardamom is commonly chewed for its aroma and used in after-meal blends. It is a culinary ingredient, not a substitute for oral hygiene.
Does cardamom contain sugar?
Plain cardamom does not have added sugar. A cardamom-flavoured product may, so check its ingredient list.
